2014 Year In Review

Greetings, loved ones! 2014 was a year of true excitement for 23 Skidoo, with lots of growth! Below are some of the highlights. Thank you for sharing in the dreamz of this infant company, that celebrated turning one years old!

23 Skidoo started the year with a bang as a super stellar feature on Making Nice in the Midwest.

When spring rolled around we got an email entitled “Elijah Wood loves 23 Skidoo!” A lovely little Skadette (who interviews, by occupation) wore her Dede’s Record Dress while interviewing Elijah and his crew. At the end of the interview Elijah complimented her dress. Yes. 23 Skidoo’s dress hugged Elijah Wood!!!! Listen to the interview here.

Many designers are thriving in Cleveland, and 23 Skidoo has joined the party. In August I became a part-time designer for FOUNT here in the city, which has been one of the best experiences I’ve had as an artist, maker, designer, entrepreneur, and business owner. What a privilege and inspiration this new venture has been to the 23 Skidoo creative process, from behind the scenes.

23 Skidoo went to Los Angeles! We were so proud to be a part of The African Millennium Foundation’s event Building Hope. The whole event was for the purpose to start building needed schools in Africa. I love having opportunities so support such influential causes.

To close the year the way it began, 23 Skidoo went out with a bang at the Cleveland Flea’s Holiday Show. The 23S team built a little tree house installation mock-store. Lots of fun dancing happened in the tree house all weekend.

In 2014 we saw much growth on the business end of 23 Skidoo: we shipped to Skadettes in Switzerland, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, Italy, France, and Mexico, not to mention various states all across the USA. There were lots of hopes created for the future, with good vibes all around! So here’s to 2015!!! Thank you for being a vital part of the realization of this dream, Skadettes… You make the dream… You are the dream. I’m so happy we’re in cahoots together. It’s our little secret!

23S Summer Check In

Yoo hoo! Why is summer going by so fast?!?! **sigh…** Well anyway, I think it is about time for a little 23S Check In!

Say hello to Betsy’s Summer Night Magic Dress above! Isn’t it just magical? I picture fairy dust surrounding this dress at all times. Abby looks so divine in it with her pearly blonde hair! There is currently only ONE of these dresses left and guess what! It’s ON SALE!!!!!!! (–“BEST DAY EVERRR!”, they all exclaimed at once). This is the sample dress which means it was the first dress to be made so there is a small teeny tiny sewing tweak but nevertheless still beautiful and filled with fairy dust! 23 Skidoo has an EXCLUSIVE design on Emerging Thoughts!! Sizes XS-L are being sold. Doesn’t Katie look cute in it? Then again, she always looks cute, so ya know. I’ve been busy at the Cleveland Flea every month this summer. It is never ever a bore meeting new Skadettes every month! The next one is in just a couple weeks on August 9th, come on down!!! The Skadette Life: Behind Cleveland Bound

Hey Skadets, this one is for you! This past week I got together with Adam who designed the Cleveland Bound Fabric that this 23 Skidoo shirt is made out of. Adam is one of the most real life Adventurers I have ever known. I was able to snap some pictures of him in his element at the skatepark wearing the shirt we collaborated on…

The patch on his hat is one of his designs as well. Check out his Instagram for constant updates of his daily designs and work right HERE. It is very inspiring. It has been fun to see this shirt range on so many different kinds of men. It is a true Anywhere Adventure Wear piece!

Poesy’s Picnic Dress (Coming This Week!)

Big June Events!

Good morning Skadettes,

You can not go a minute longer without being aware of what is to come this lovely month! First on the list: our favorite Cleveland Flea! This month’s Flea is Saturday June 14th from 9-4pm. To be a part of it is such an honor and it is a total blast to be there all day meeting Skadet[te]s and shopping alongside such incredible artists and vendors!

Look out! June 25th is going to be a big one! This is RAW Cleveland’s event at the Agora and it is about to be a blast! The 23 Skidoo team  is building from scratch a very fun production set and will be having a fashion instillation with live models showing off 23 Skidoo’s collection. The rough draft of the project is almost finished and I can’t wait to begin building. The RAW event will have tons of visual art, musicians, and fashion. Tickets are $15 and can be bought on 23 Skidoo’s profile right HERE. I hope to see many of you this month at one of these events. There’s so much life to live, kiddies!

Make a Daisy Umbrella

 

Hello Adventurers,

This week was full of cloudy skies and rainy evenings in Cleveland. When I pull this umbrella out of my trunk I enjoy feeling confident of the cuteness over my head, shielding my hair did from ruins. Does anybody else love these clear bubble umbrellas as much as I do? Something about them inspires my imagination. I once saw a vintage photo of a clear umbrella with daisies all over it and decided it was time to up my umbrella game. So I did. I enjoy using this umbrella even when my hair do isn’t in danger!

Ahh, spring is the best thing ever right now… Dream on, my dear Skadettes…

23 Skidoo Party Crownz in Kent

Skadettes, you sure are fun! This past Monday I brought the one and only Party Crownz to Kent for the “Infinity Is Still Confusing (or: Help My Brain Hurts)” performance. It was quite a time! It was themed as the ultimate 90’s girl sleepover. As if that doesn’t sound amazing enough, it was all you could possibly dream of in real life. The Party Crownz fit in perfectly! When you get a “slumber party” packed with dancers and metallic crownz with funny sayings, you know it’s gonna be a good time. One woman actually bought the Yolo Party Crownz and is saving it for her 50th birthday party coming up this year. That made my heart quite exuberant!

For the Party Crownz station, I built a tiny 3×3 room made with walls from metallic gold fabric. Skadettes had to go into the teeny little gold room to see the Party Crownz and try them on. It made for a mini magical time! I hope to do fun little events like this more in the future! It was inspiring, personable, and refreshing to be among these young, passionate creatives!

23 Skidoo-Adam Vicarel Collaboration Story

Oh, Skadettes… there is much to be said…

Sit down, grab some tea, and let’s chat. Hear ye a tale… of a dream within a dream, all coming true…

One of my school projects during my first year of fashion school was to design a print for fabric, then design a garment to be made with that printed fabric. The project didn’t entail making the actual garment, just designing it on Illustrator. From the depths of love for Cleveland, out of me came a nautical story print about fleeing to the CLE. The print isn’t that great, it’s mostly stolen illustrations of ships and maps from the internet that I put together on Photoshop. But the idea of the dress has stuck with me ever since.

Last May (2013) when I was in my last quarter of college, planning 23 Skidoo, I messaged my long-time friend and neighbor, Adam Vicarel. Adam is THE most motivated, passionate artist I have ever met, ever. One of my original plans for 23 Skidoo was to collaborate with other artists in each collection. I decided to team with Adam in my first collaboration. Though Adam is an artist of many kinds, graphic design has been his main focus, so I presented the idea to him of designing a fabric together to get printed and create garments.

Over a course of many months we chatted more about the project. Though it was never my intention to bring my school project to life, the idea of my Lake Erie Nautical print came to life in a clash of creativity!

Adam sketched concepts, some of which you can see above. Slowly it came together as a flowing masterpiece…

That’s basically it, but do you even need anymore information?? No? That’s what I thought.

The red X is where Cleveland hits on Lake Erie. The numbers are Cleveland’s actual longitute/latitude coordinates. And basically, dreams come true here, so I want to wear Cleveland on my sleeve with pride as an adventurous Skadette! Don’t you??

Finally, we got the design printed on many yards of fabric by the gentlemen at Superelectric (Ben, David, and Nate). They built a custom silk screen to make this fabric. David used to design maps, which came in handy!

Now, there are not only women’s dresses of the Cleveland Nautical print, but men’s button-ups too.  Throughout the summer season you will see this print pop up in various ways!!

I can’t believe this is happening. I hope you all feel the Cleveland love when you wear the garments, as much as I do!! Pieces will be for sale in person April 12th (ONE WEEK) at the Cleveland Flea, then they will be available online April 15th.

Three months ago Adam quit his job and traveled to Asia, to live by the seat of his pants, until the money runs out. The life of a true Skadet–every minute is an adventure.
